Taylor Swift has officially released the music video for her latest single, “Opalite,” and, in classic Swift fashion, the concept behind it comes with a charming backstory. The singer recently shared that the idea for the whimsical video struck her while she was appearing on The Graham Norton Show.
The quirky visual features Taylor portraying a woman romantically involved with a large rock, while Domhnall Gleeson appears as a man dating a cactus. The surreal premise has quickly caught fans’ attention, adding another playful chapter to Swift’s long list of imaginative music videos.
How ‘Opalite’ Took Shape
Taking to X, Taylor shared behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot and explained how the creative spark formed. She described how ideas can arrive unexpectedly, noting that the concept for Opalite “crash-landed” into her imagination during promotional appearances for The Life of a Showgirl.
She recalled being a guest on one of her favorite talk shows, praising host Graham Norton and the relaxed, dinner-party-style atmosphere of the program. According to Swift, the episode paired her with a group of artists she deeply admired, including Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Lewis Capaldi.
From a Joke to a Full Script
During the conversation on the show, Domhnall Gleeson jokingly mentioned that he would love to appear in one of Taylor’s music videos. What began as lighthearted banter instantly sparked an idea. Swift revealed that just a week later, Gleeson received a script she had written, casting him in a starring role for Opalite.
She then decided to take the concept even further by inviting everyone from that episode—including Graham Norton himself—to be part of the project. Swift compared the experience to “a school group project, but for adults,” emphasizing that the collaboration was entirely voluntary.
A Joyful, Nostalgic Collaboration
According to Swift, the cast and crew embraced the concept wholeheartedly, leaning into a playful, ’90s-inspired aesthetic. She also shared her excitement about reuniting with cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, describing the shoot as one of the most fun creative experiences she’s had.
She added that viewers might even spot familiar faces from The Eras Tour, making the video feel like a celebration of both new and longtime collaborations. Shot on film, the Opalite video blends humor, metaphor, and bold fashion choices into a uniquely Swiftian visual story.
Where to Watch the ‘Opalite’ Music Video
Taylor Swift’s team confirmed that the Opalite music video is currently available on Spotify Premium and Apple Music. Fans can expect the video to debut on YouTube on Sunday, February 8.
