Concern continues to grow for Savannah Guthrie after her mother, Nancy Guthrie, remained missing eight days after authorities say she was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home.
Over the weekend, Savannah and her siblings released a public video message directed at whoever is holding their 84-year-old mother. According to a retired FBI negotiator, one specific word in that message may have been intentionally chosen to de-escalate the situation.
The Message to the Captor
On Saturday, February 7, Savannah appeared on Instagram alongside her sister Annie Guthrie and brother Camron Guthrie, delivering a direct plea.
“We received your message, and we understand,” Savannah said in the video. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace.”
She added that the family was willing to pay, writing simply in the caption: “Bring her home.”
Why One Word Stood Out to Investigators
Former FBI special agent and crisis negotiator Jason Pack told the Daily Mail that the word “celebrate” appeared deliberate.
“That word stood out to me immediately,” Pack explained. “Savannah didn’t say ‘surrender her’ or ‘give her back.’ She said ‘return her so we can celebrate.’ That’s the language of resolution, not confrontation.”
According to Pack, successful negotiations often rely on framing an outcome as positive for all parties involved. “You want the other side to envision a peaceful ending,” he said, adding that the most dangerous moments in abduction cases occur when communication stops.
Ongoing Investigation in Tucson
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been searching for Nancy Guthrie since February 1. She was last seen on the evening of January 31 at her Tucson residence, which authorities have since declared a crime scene.
Investigators have confirmed that blood found inside the home belonged to Nancy and concluded she was taken against her will. Since then, law enforcement has returned to the property multiple times, including with K9 units, as the search intensifies.
Officials are also reviewing several alleged ransom notes, one of which reportedly includes a deadline of Monday, February 9, at 5 p.m., along with a substantial monetary demand.
FBI Involvement and New Developments
Federal authorities have joined the investigation, with agents reportedly seen carrying a silver briefcase into Nancy’s home. Investigators are also reviewing footage of a vehicle of interest and examining a camera discovered on the roof of the residence. The FBI has expanded its efforts across multiple states as the case develops.
Despite these leads, Nancy Guthrie has not yet been located.
Anyone with information related to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance is urged to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
As the search continues, Savannah Guthrie and her family remain focused on one goal — bringing their mother home safely.
