McDonald’s Is Offering Free Caviar — Yes, Caviar — for Valentine’s Day

McDonald’s is leaning into luxury this Valentine’s Day — with a twist only the fast-food giant could pull off. A limited number of customers will have the chance to enjoy Chicken McNuggets paired with caviar, courtesy of a special giveaway launching this week.

Starting at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, McDonald’s will release a small batch of “McNugget Caviar” kits through its official site. The giveaway is available at mcnuggetcaviar.com/countdown and is expected to sell out quickly.

What’s Inside the McNugget Caviar Kit?

According to McDonald’s, each Valentine’s Day kit is designed to offer “an upscale yet effortless celebration.” The package includes:

  • A 1-ounce tin of “McNugget Caviar”
  • Crème fraîche
  • A Mother-of-Pearl caviar spoon
  • A $25 McDonald’s gift card for Chicken McNuggets

It’s a tongue-in-cheek take on fine dining — and a clear play for viral attention.

Why McDonald’s Is Doing This

The promotion highlights how brands are getting more creative to stand out as consumers remain cautious with spending. With economic sentiment still subdued, companies are increasingly turning to attention-grabbing stunts that generate buzz, even if they don’t immediately drive revenue.

Targeted campaigns like this can boost brand awareness and social engagement. McDonald’s saw similar success last year with a promotional tie-in linked to A Minecraft Movie, which helped reverse declining sales after two consecutive down quarters.

The Internet Made Them Do It

McDonald’s told Food & Wine that the caviar idea came directly from fan behavior. For years, social media users have praised the “high-low” pairing of McNuggets and caviar — turning the unlikely combo into an inside joke among food lovers.

Even Rihanna joined the trend, sampling the pairing in a TikTok video in 2024.

“They’ve been pairing Chicken McNuggets with caviar long before we made it official,” the company told the magazine.

Chicken Is Just as Big as Burgers Now

While McDonald’s built its empire on burgers, chicken has become just as important. CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors in 2024 that chicken sales are now on par with beef across the chain’s restaurants.

The company is set to report quarterly earnings on Wednesday. For the first nine months of the year, global sales rose 1%, excluding currency effects. U.S. same-store sales were up 2.4% in the third quarter.

A Valentine’s Day Stunt Meant to Go Viral

McDonald’s isn’t necessarily expecting customers to replace filet mignon with McNuggets and caviar — but the buzz is the point. In a crowded market, a free luxury giveaway can generate massive attention, social sharing, and brand goodwill.

And for a lucky few this Valentine’s Day, love might just taste like nuggets and caviar.
