Former Purdue, NFL Wide Receiver Rondale Moore Dies at Age 25

Former Purdue standout and NFL wide receiver Rondale Moore has died at the age of 25, the Minnesota Vikings confirmed in a statement Saturday, sending shockwaves through the football world.

Police in New Albany, Indiana, told WHAS11 that Moore was found in a garage with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. Floyd County Coroner Matthew Tomlin said an autopsy would be conducted but did not release further details.

Vikings, NFL Community Mourn Sudden Loss

The Minnesota Vikings expressed deep sorrow over Moore’s passing, emphasizing their support for his family and teammates during this difficult time.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rondale Moore,” the team said. “While we are working to understand the facts, we have spoken with Rondale’s family to offer our condolences and the full support of the Minnesota Vikings. We have also been in communication with our players, coaches, and staff, and will make counseling and emotional support resources available to anyone in need. Our thoughts are with Rondale’s family and friends during this devastating time.”

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell also paid tribute, describing Moore as a humble and resilient young man proud of his Indiana roots.

NFL Career Marked by Talent and Injuries

Moore was selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals after an electrifying college career at Purdue.

During three seasons with Arizona, he started 23 games and recorded:

  • 135 receptions
  • 1,201 receiving yards
  • 3 touchdowns
  • 52 rushing attempts for 249 yards and 1 score

Injuries unfortunately limited his playing time in later years. He missed the 2024 season after suffering a dislocated right knee while with the Atlanta Falcons.

Most recently, Moore participated in the Minnesota Vikings’ 2025 offseason and training camp but suffered a season-ending left knee injury while returning a punt during a preseason game on Aug. 9.

College Stardom at Purdue

Before reaching the NFL, Moore was one of the most exciting players in college football.

As a freshman at Purdue in 2018, he became an Associated Press First-Team All-American and won the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player.

Over three college seasons, he totaled:

  • 1,915 receiving yards
  • 14 receiving touchdowns
  • 248 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns

Former Purdue coach Jeff Brohm remembered Moore as a fierce competitor and beloved teammate.

“Rondale Moore was a complete joy to coach,” Brohm said. “The ultimate competitor that wouldn’t back down from any challenge. Rondale had a work ethic unmatched by anyone. A great teammate that would come through in any situation. We all loved Rondale, we loved his smile and competitive edge that always wanted to please everyone he came in contact with.”

Remembering a Promising Career Cut Short

Moore’s explosive speed, versatility and determination made him one of football’s brightest young talents. His journey was marked by both remarkable achievements and difficult setbacks due to injuries.

The NFL community, former teammates, coaches and fans continue to mourn the loss of a player whose potential was still unfolding.
