Action icon and martial arts legend Chuck Norris has died at the age of 86, his family confirmed in a heartfelt statement shared Friday.
“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” the family wrote. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”
According to reports, Norris experienced a medical emergency in Hawaii on Thursday. His family thanked fans for their prayers and support during his final moments.
From Martial Arts Champion to Hollywood Icon
Born Carlos Ray Norris in Oklahoma, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognizable action stars in the world.
Norris first gained global attention after starring alongside Bruce Lee in the 1972 film The Way of the Dragon, where their legendary fight scene became one of cinema’s most iconic moments.
He later built a successful film career in the 1970s and 1980s with hits like:
- Missing in Action
- Delta Force
- Lone Wolf McQuade
Known for his stoic personality and tough-guy image, Norris became a defining face of classic action cinema.
‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ Made Him a Household Name
While his film career slowed in the 1990s, Norris found massive success on television with Walker, Texas Ranger.
He played Cordell Walker, a crime-fighting Texas Ranger, in the long-running series from 1993 to 2001. The role introduced him to a new generation of fans and cemented his legacy in pop culture.
In 2010, Norris was even named an honorary Texas Ranger by then-Governor Rick Perry — a fitting tribute to the character that defined his TV career.
Martial Arts Master and Teacher

Before Hollywood, Norris was already a world-class martial artist.
He began training while serving in the U.S. Air Force in Korea and later became a world karate champion. He even developed his own martial arts system, the Chuck Norris System™, based on his Tang Soo Do background.
Among his students were high-profile names like:
- Priscilla Presley
- Steve McQueen
- Bob Barker
His discipline and philosophy emphasized self-control, mental strength and avoiding violence whenever possible.

The Rise of “Chuck Norris Facts”
Beyond film and television, Norris became an internet phenomenon.
The viral trend known as “Chuck Norris facts” turned his tough-guy persona into humorous, exaggerated legends that spread across early social media and email chains.
One of his favorite jokes, as he once shared:
“They wanted to put Chuck Norris on Mt. Rushmore, but the granite wasn’t tough enough for his beard.”
A Life of Purpose Beyond Entertainment
Norris was also deeply committed to giving back.
In 1990, with support from former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, he founded Kickstart Kids, a program that uses martial arts to teach discipline, respect and life values to students.
He often spoke about how martial arts could reduce violence by building confidence and inner strength.
Legacy of a True Icon
Chuck Norris leaves behind a legacy that spans martial arts, film, television and global pop culture.
From his unforgettable fight scenes to his role as a cultural icon — and even a meme legend — Norris inspired millions with his discipline, strength and unwavering values.
“He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved,” his family said.
