Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the beloved toy gang are gearing up for an emotional and timely comeback in Toy Story 5, the next chapter in Pixar’s iconic franchise. With a story that reflects modern childhood, the film will explore how technology is changing the way kids play — and what that means for toys fighting to stay relevant.
Directed by Andrew Stanton, the fifth installment reunites Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz, promising nostalgia, humor and heartfelt storytelling when it arrives in theaters in 2026.
A New Threat: Technology vs. Toys
This time, the toys face a challenge unlike anything before — electronics.
Director Andrew Stanton revealed that the story centers on how tablets, devices and digital entertainment are reshaping childhood playtime.
“In Toy Story 5 the toys’ jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head to head with what kids are obsessed with today: electronics,” Stanton shared at Disney’s D23 Expo.
The film will also shine a bigger spotlight on Jessie, with Tim Allen confirming the cowgirl has a major role in the story alongside Woody and Buzz’s reunion.
Where Toy Story 4 Left Off
The emotional ending of Toy Story 4 changed everything.

Woody chose a new path, leaving Bonnie’s room behind to live as a lost toy with Bo Peep, helping abandoned toys find new homes. Buzz stayed behind with Jessie, Rex, Hamm, Forky and the rest of Bonnie’s toys.
That separation set the stage for Toy Story 5, where the old friends must reunite for a new mission.
Plot: A “Toy Meets Tech” Story
The new film picks up after the events of the previous installment.
Bonnie, now 8 years old, becomes increasingly absorbed in a smart tablet called Lily Pad, which allows her to chat with friends and play games — but also pulls her attention away from her toys.
Jessie now leads Bonnie’s room with Buzz as her deputy, while Woody continues helping lost toys elsewhere. When the gang realizes Bonnie is drifting away from playtime, Woody is called back to help.
Pixar’s Pete Docter described the story as a “toy meets tech” conflict, with emotional stakes as the toys try to reclaim their place in Bonnie’s life.

Trailer Teases an Emotional Reunion
The first official trailer, released February 19, 2026, shows the toys confronting Bonnie’s growing obsession with her tablet.
Rex panics as he realizes toys may be replaced again, while Woody communicates with Jessie from afar before deciding to return and help save playtime.
The clip hints at tension between Woody and Buzz, suggesting their reunion won’t be entirely smooth.
Directors Behind the Film
Andrew Stanton, a Pixar legend known for Finding Nemo and A Bug’s Life, directs the film alongside McKenna Harris, who worked on Elemental and the Luca short Ciao Alberto.

Stanton has been involved with Toy Story since the original film, making his return especially meaningful for longtime fans.
Release Date and Where to Watch
Toy Story 5 releases in theaters on June 19, 2026.
Until then, fans can revisit the previous films on Disney+ and relive the journey that made Woody and Buzz household names for generations.
