MANILA, Philippines — Jeremy Lin, the Harvard guard who sparked the unforgettable “Linsanity” craze in 2012, has officially announced his retirement from basketball after a 15-year career.
Back in 2012, the New York Knicks were stumbling through another disappointing season despite stars Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. Then came Lin—an unheralded, little-known point guard who suddenly transformed the Knicks and captured global attention.
In a stunning stretch, Lin delivered clutch performances, including a game-winning shot against the Toronto Raptors and a 38-point explosion versus Kobe Bryant’s Lakers. He helped the Knicks secure a playoff spot with a 36-30 record, averaging 14.6 points, 6.2 assists, and 1.6 steals—numbers that dwarfed his modest stats the year before with Golden State. Unfortunately, a late-season knee injury cut short his magical run.
Thirteen years later, Lin has decided to hang up his sneakers. In an emotional Instagram post, he reflected on his journey:
“Actually saying goodbye to basketball today has been the hardest decision I’ve ever made. It’s been the honor of a lifetime to compete under the brightest lights and challenge what the world thought was possible for someone who looks like me.”
After his breakout in New York, Lin went on to play for the Houston Rockets, Lakers, Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, and Toronto Raptors—where he earned his lone NBA championship ring in 2019. He later continued his career overseas, suiting up for the Beijing Ducks in China, and in Taiwan’s P.League+ with the Kaohsiung 17Live Steelers and New Taipei Kings.
Though he attempted an NBA return via the G-League, it never materialized.
Grateful to fans and mentors who supported him throughout, Lin closed his statement by saying:
“This is a ride I never wanted to end, but I know it’s time. I will forever miss playing basketball in front of you all, but here’s to what’s ahead.”
Lin retires with career NBA averages of 11.6 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.8 rebounds across nearly 500 games, forever remembered as the underdog who inspired millions with “Linsanity.”
